Moldow Promoted To General Partner At Foundation

By John Letzing

Charles Moldow has been promoted to general partner at Silicon Valley firm Foundation Capital, after serving just over one year as a venture partner.

Moldow's tenure as general partner began last week. Investments that Moldow has been involved with at Foundation include enterprise networking company TuVox Inc., software company Traverse Networks Inc. and on-demand video company Arroyo Video Solutions Inc., which was sold to Cisco Systems Inc. last August for $92 million. Prior to that, the company had raised $27 million in venture capital.

Moldow said he has also done two more investments with Foundation which are still in stealth mode. Foundation Capital closed a $525 million fund last March. Asked if the plan all along was to bring him up to general partner to manage the new fund, Moldow said "I don't know that it was ever explicitly stated, but probably."

Moldow's connections to Foundation Capital General Partner Adam Grosser go back to the time the two spent working together at @Home Corp., the cable Internet pioneer that merged with Excite Inc. in the 1990s before going out of business after the Internet bubble burst.

Prior to @Home, Moldow was an executive with TCI Cable, where in addition to helping hatch @Home he said he was involved in corporate venture investing. Moldow said he has also been actively managing two "friends and family funds" for the past eight years or so, as well as investing as an individual. Immediately prior to joining Foundation, Moldow served as an executive with enterprise voice application company Tellme Networks.

Moldow said that while Foundation general partners are not limited in scope, he most likely will be focusing on consumer, wireless, VoIP and software-as-a-service deals in his new position.
