Redelfs joined the firm as an executive-in-residence last year, and sourced the firm's recent investment in SiBEAM and helped Solarflare Communications raise its recent $48-million round. In his new role, Redelfs will continue identifying new investments and working with existing portfolio companies. Redelfs has more than 20 years of experience in networking and communications. Most recently, he was president and CEO of Atheros Communications (NASDAQ: ATHR), a company he led from a small startup to the leading provider of Wi-Fi wireless semiconductors. Atheros was listed as "Silicon Valley's Fastest Growing Private Company" for the 2001-2003 period by the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Also, Atheros was the second largest Silicon Valley IPO in 2004, according to the San Jose Mercury News. "Coming off of his success with Atheros, Rich has distinguished himself as a tremendous value-add for our partnership," said Bill Elmore, general partner, Foundation Capital. "We are honored to have him as a member of our team and look forward to building companies together in the future." Prior to Atheros, Redelfs was vice president and general manager of 3Com's Wireless and Home Connectivity Division, where he was a pioneer in home networking. He spent ten years at 3Com in various sales, marketing, and general management positions including vice president of marketing and later acting general manager for the Mobile Communications Division, which he helped grow from $35-million to over $700-million in revenue. Other positions at 3Com included director of Americas Hub Marketing, National Reseller sales manager, and National OEM sales manager. Prior to 3Com, Redelfs was chief operating officer of Polygon, a communications software start-up. Redelfs began his professional career with TeleVideo Systems, an early leader in personal computers and networking, where he held various marketing and sales management positions. Redelfs currently serves on the board of Azimuth Systems and was previously on the board of Atheros Communications. He has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BSIE from Purdue University. "The partners at Foundation have each helped build many great companies, first as senior operating executives and then as venture capitalists," said Redelfs. "As a former CEO of a Foundation portfolio company, I appreciate that balance of operating and investor perspectives. I'm delighted to join this respected team so that I can leverage my operating successes to further this Foundation Capital tradition. I look forward to helping Foundation continue to grow its position as one of the top firms in the industry."
